Dec. 28 - Last day in the South

Our favorite waiter at the hotel ordered us a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast (string hoppers, fish curry, dhal, pol sambol), and we have it by the water.

Breakfast spread.

Sugith finds us to chat about the plans for the day. He has a friend with a van that can drive us to Colombo, and agrees to pick us up at the hotel at 7:30 pm so we can spend all day on the beach. Not wanting to get a sunburn, I take cover in the shade with a retired German couple; they are staying in a friends’ private residence for 2 weeks.

Some traditional Sri Lankan foods take 2+ hours to prepare, so it is customary to order meals far in advance of when you plan to eat. So we go to Hot Rock in the afternoon to order our dinner. Then we hike up the hill on the Western edge of the bay to the dagoba (temple) to watch the sunset. Matthew and Nadira join us for dinner. They're staying in Sri Lanka for a couple more weeks, so we give them insect repellant, Purell and Wet Ones as a parting gift.

That night, Sugith and his friend safely deliver us back to Colombo, and we have sad goodbyes in the hotel lobby.

Our trusty tuk-tuk driver Sugith.
