Day 3 Friday am – Ann vs. the volcano

About an hour’s drive outside of Cartagena is a little volcano, Volcan de Lodo El Totumo. But instead of housing molten lava, it contains warm mud. We went there to check it out. Basically you climb in, get dunked, and there are some guys there to massage you. The mud is very buoyant; you can move around, but it’s pretty resistant. Afterwards you go to a nearby lagoon/lake to wash the mud off.

The volcano.

Mud baths all around!

Some of our companions on this journey are 4 Australian guys from Melbourne who’re traveling through the US and Latin America for 6 months and a dude from Zimbabwe who’s been traveling for 18 months. I feel like such a dork for just taking a week off for this trip (or at the very least, an excessive American work-aholic).

We have lunch on the beach in La Boquilla, a little fishing village, before heading back to the city.
